Reveal brighter, clearer, healthier-looking skin

Intense Pulsed Light is an advanced light-based treatment that targets unwanted pigment and visible blood vessels without damaging the surrounding skin. Carefully controlled pulses are absorbed by excess melanin and by haemoglobin, and the body then clears what has been targeted naturally.

In an Australian climate it is one of the most useful things we do. Years of sun accumulate quietly on the face, neck and décolletage, and IPL is the tool that lifts that scattered damage rather than working on one mark at a time.

It is not a one-off. Improvement builds across a course of 3 to 5, and the protecting you do between sessions matters as much as the sessions themselves.

Worth knowing before you book

There is downtime, and you should plan for it

Plenty of clinics describe IPL as having minimal downtime. We would rather be straight with you, because knowing what happens next is the difference between a good experience and an alarming one.

After treatment the pigment being targeted rises and temporarily darkens, looking a little like fine coffee grounds across the treated area. Over the following 7 to 14 days it flakes away on its own. Redness and visible capillaries fade more gradually as the treated vessels are reabsorbed.

None of that is painful, and it covers easily. But it is visible, so book with a clear fortnight ahead of anything that matters rather than the week before a wedding.

What it is good for

  • Sun spots
  • Age spots
  • Freckling you would rather not have
  • General solar damage
  • Uneven skin tone
  • The appearance of diffuse redness
  • Visible surface capillaries
  • The look of facial flushing
  • Sun-damaged neck and décolletage

Often paired with Laser Genesis

IPL lifts what is sitting on and near the surface: pigment, sun damage and defined capillaries. Laser Genesis works underneath, building collagen and softening the look of diffuse redness, texture and pore size, with virtually no downtime.

Run across a course together they cover considerably more ground than either does alone: tone, texture, redness, pores and overall luminosity. Which one you start with depends entirely on what is bothering you most, and that is a conversation for your consultation.

Questions

What clients ask before booking

What is the downtime, honestly?

Plan for 7 to 14 days. This is the part worth understanding before you book. After treatment the pigment you are targeting comes to the surface and temporarily gets darker, almost like fine coffee grounds, before it flakes away naturally over the following week or 2. It is not painful and it is easily covered, but it is visible. If you have an event coming up, book well before it rather than just after.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people get their best result from a course of 3 to 5. Sun damage that took 20 years to accumulate does not lift in one session, and anyone promising that is selling you something. Jessica will give you a realistic number once she has looked at your skin.

What does it actually do?

IPL delivers carefully controlled pulses of light that are absorbed by excess melanin and by haemoglobin, without damaging the skin around them. The body then clears what has been targeted naturally, which is why the improvement appears over the following weeks rather than immediately.

Will it work on my skin?

IPL works by targeting pigment, which means suitability genuinely depends on your skin tone and your recent sun exposure. This is not a treatment that can be booked blind. Every course starts with a consultation, and if IPL is not the right tool for your skin you will be told so and offered something that is.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe it as a quick flick of heat, like a light elastic band, with cooling in between. It is brief and very manageable. Tell your therapist if it is more than that and the settings are adjusted.

Can I have it if I have been in the sun?

Not recently, no. Recent sun exposure or a tan changes how the light is absorbed and makes the treatment less safe and less effective. Come in with skin that has been protected, and keep it protected between sessions. Sunscreen is not optional during a course.

How is this different to Laser Genesis?

IPL is the better choice for unwanted pigment, sun damage and defined surface capillaries. Laser Genesis works on overall skin quality: the look of diffuse redness, texture, pores and firmness, with virtually no downtime. Many people run the 2 together because they cover different ground.

Start with a skin consultation

IPL suitability depends on your skin tone and your recent sun exposure, so it is never booked blind. If it is not right for your skin, you will be told so.
