What are you putting on your face? The ingredients you need to know about...

Its amazing how one will pick up a product to put on their skin (and therefore absorb into their body) and pay more attention to what's on the outside of the bottle than what's on the inside.

The next time you pick up a beautiful box, turn it over and have a read. There are a few ingredients that you really don't want to be applying to your skin. I guarantee if you walk into your bathroom right now, you will find a product with some of these ingredients listed. Ingredients that are so toxic, the companies require workers to wear completely covered protective gear and all have studies indicating they are carcinogenic. Read on - it's seriously crazy...

DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamin) & TEA (Triethanolamine) is an ingredient I see used in even the most "Luxury brands". Also used as a foaming agent in most supermarket bubble baths, body washes and facial cleansers, this product is an eye irritant, strips the skin of it's natural oils - which allows other toxins to be easily absorbed and also starts to build up with in the body's organs.

Mineral Oils/Petro chemicals/petrolatum (and its derivatives)/ parraffinum. Used as a mechanical lubricant... eh hemmm... need I say more? According to the Environmental Working Group, Mineral oil is derived from petroleum and may be contaminated with cancer-causing polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Mineral oil coats the skin inhibiting absorption, excretion and the skin's natural removal of toxins resulting in breakout and acne. It strangulates the skin also resulting in premature ageing.

Peroxides/benzol peroxide the "quick fix" of acne reduction. Peroxides help to immediately treat a skin infection but used over a prolonged period of time actually inhibit the white blood cells from doing that job because the skin starts to depend on the peroxide to do the job of the white blood cells. It dehydrates the skin and evaporates all the skins natural moisture hindering all the other natural healthy functions of the skin like collagen and elastine production. Peroxide is bleaching and whitening and makes you extra sensitive to the sun aswell. Overall, this ingredient will only treat the skin for as long as you use it but will leave the skin dehydrated and sensitive - Not to mention it bleaches your face towels! 

Propylene Glycol (PG) & Butylene Glycol derived from plastic is considered so toxic that it has to be disposed of in a special way. The EPA warns against skin contact to prevent brain, liver and kidney abnormalities.

Sodium Laureth sulfate/ Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is one of the most commonly used foaming agents in super market bubble baths, facial cleansers, body washes and..... CAR WASHES! 90% of personal-care products that foam use this agent. It strips the skin of it's natural moisturizing factors inhibiting its protection allowing even more nasty toxin's to absorb into the skin causing ageing and sensitivity.

Talc popularly used for nappy rash on babies, has been linked to ovarian and testicular cancer. It is also one of the biggest causes of congestion and break out. I see alot of congestion along the cheek area due to the use of bronzers which have high concentrates of talc. Talc is found in most cosmetics.

Tips on how to avoid using said nasties:

Educate yourself on the above ingredients and more. If you are unfamiliar with the name of an ingredient in your products, Google it! Ingredients are always listed from highest concentrate to lowest - so you know roughly how much of what is in your products.

5 collagen producing foods you need in your life!

As the skin care industry continues to ramp up their technology promising more youthful, radiant, bright, glowing, plump, smooth, organic... have I missed any of the main buzz words yet? Being a skin care enthusiast for more than half my life - some of the products out their actually do work. But here's the hot tip: There's no quick fix... Adding collagen inducing ingredients to your diet will make sure you are combating the ageing process internally as well as externally. Pay attention ladies because once its too late - it's too late!

Try adding these collagen-rich foods to your diet to stimulate your skin's natural production and kick start the collagen process that you already own.

1. Soy products - There is an element known in soy products called genistein.  Genestein gives soy its collagen inducing qualities. There is also an enzyme in soy products that inhibits the break down responsible for ageing the skin.

2. Dark green leafy vegetables - Kale, asparagus, and spinach are packed with an anti-oxidant called Lutein. You need 10mgs to start achieving results. You only need half as much kale as you do spinach. These products also help to boost the skin's natural hydration and elasticity. Vitamin C rich, regular consumption helps to strengthen the body's ability to manufacture collagen.

3. Red and Orange fruit and veg - Watermelon, tomatoes, capsicum, beetroot are high in lycopenes which are a great source of anti-oxidants which in turn increases the collagen within the skin. Oranges, carrots, sweet potato and pumpkin are high in Vitamin C which stimulates and strengthens the skin's natural collagen process.

4. Omega acids - Tuna, salmon,nuts and avocado are excellent sources of omega fatty acids. The presence of omega fatty acids within the skin promotes the ideal environment for collagen synthesis.

5. Prunes - Who knew!? Prunes contain one of the highest levels of anti-oxidants in the fruit world. Neutralising the free radical damage done to our skin every day which compromises and breaks down our skin's collagen.

Tips for the week:

1. Why not make a collagen inducing stir fry?

Saute the strips of meat of your choice, garlic and onion until cooked, then add in 1/2 cup of kale, 1/2 cup of red capsicum, 1/2 cup carrots, 1/4 cashews, sliced firm tofu and lightly toss untill warmed through - try not to over cook, this will help keep the nutrients in the ingredients. Bon apetite!

2. Prepare some trail mixes for your work day - Try: diced capsicum, carrot and almond or: Blueberries, goji berries, diced prunes and brazil nuts.

3. Try adding a few of the above mentioned to the shopping list and prep your list before you go to the supermarket so you are organised and don't stray too far off the path (unfortunately there's not too many health benefits in lollies and icecream!).

Is grapefruit one of the most beautifying foods in the world?

Grapefruit is one of my favourite fruits. Especially after i've over indulged on the weekend and am in need of a quick fix debloat and pick me up. Iv'e been prescribing this wonder fruit to alot of my clients recently to help purify their skin. Whilst researching Grapefruit's benefits, I started to notice that there were ALOT of benefits. Not only is grapefruit (predominantly of the pink and red variety) shown to lower blood glucose levels, assist in weight-loss and as research has shown fights against cancer prevention but it is also know to help your body work efficiently at flushing out toxins from the body and the waste from all your cells - the latter is specifically what will make the skin appear clean, bright and even. The vitamins and minerals in grapefruit will feed your cells keeping the skin cells healthy and strong and make your skin absolutely glow. Grapefruit helps to cleanse the liver helping make dark circles under the eyes appear brighter and can also aid in preventing and clearing breakout.

Not only can you ingest grapefruit for its skin benefits but applied topically will fight free-radicall damage and deliver a surge of anti-oxidants directly into the skin.
